About GymWasp

Who is building GymWasp, how it works as a business, what it looks like, and where it is going.

The team

James Owens

Chief Executive Officer

James brings over nine years in data, business analysis and reporting, across roles in London, Belfast and Sydney. That background is the reason GymWasp treats training as a data problem first: every set you log is a measurement, and the product's job is to turn those measurements into a decision about what you should do next.

John Watson

Advisor

John is an infrastructure and cloud architect working in multi-cloud architecture, Kubernetes and CI/CD, and is a Google Cloud certified Professional Cloud Architect. He has run incident management and operations at company scale, and advises GymWasp on the platform and delivery side — the parts you only notice when they go wrong.

Meg Watson

Head of Quality

Meg is an ISTQB-certified software test engineer, working in quality engineering at Matillion, and a member of the Cypress Cy.pronauts crew. She owns what 'working' means at GymWasp — not just that a feature ships, but that it behaves correctly on your data, on your device, on the day you actually train.

Business model

GymWasp is for people who train with a goal — lifters, runners, hybrid athletes, anyone working towards an event — and want a programme that keeps up with them instead of a template that doesn't.

Free to play

Today

Build your programme, log every session and climb the leaderboards against other athletes. The full training loop costs nothing.

Premium

Planned

A subscription for athletes who want unlimited access, or who would rather skip the game and get straight to the training.

The product

Right now we're building from the back end out: making the platform stable and accurate enough to serve millions of athletes. The interface gets its turn next.

Even with today's rudimentary UI, athletes have already completed over 11,000 sets across more than 550 exercises (as of October 2026).

History and direction

GymWasp started from a straightforward frustration: training apps hand you a template and then stop paying attention. They do not notice that you missed a session, that a lift has stalled for a month, or that the programme they gave you in January stopped fitting in March. The plan is static and you are not.

So we built the opposite. GymWasp watches how you train, learns what works for you specifically, and builds what comes next from your own history rather than from a generic block someone wrote for a stranger. Every rep logged makes it sharper. No templates, no cookie-cutter programmes.

Where it is heading: a training partner that carries real context. One that remembers what you did last cycle, understands why an assessment moved, adapts when life gets in the way, and can explain its reasoning rather than just handing down a number. We are building it in the open with an alpha group whose feedback shapes what gets built next — which is why you are reading this page.
